I will be moving back to Duluth at the end of May, Will I still be able to fish for steelhead and Kamloops in the rivers and mouths anywhere along the North Shore? Will it still be productive through mid June? Anyone with information please respond. Thank You.

Jamie

P.S.--What is the best method of fishing?

Ron, Boats were coming out of the Brule river this past weekend. However, they had to paddle or push their boats over the sand bar to get out.

we hit park point lastnight (may 1st). the smelt run was really slow, and the north wind pushed tons of ice toward shore and we had to leave.

Fished this past weekend at Brule WI. Lots of action with 10 fish caught Sat and 15 on Sun. All jake kings on Sat with a mix of kings and coho on Sun. Fished the surface (15 ft depth) and caught all fish in the mud (water temp went from 37 in clear to 43 in mud) Long boat ride to get there (put in at Knife River)and rough on return Sun. Hope to get back there this weekend if the wind allows it.

We were hunting for smelt on 4/26/03. No luck what so ever. Question: Where exactly on Park Point is the best place to sein? If the park closes at 10:00 PM how do you fish at MN Point? Is the ice gone? We are thinking of comming up this Sat night. Will there be any action or do I have to bring along extra beer and stand around and tell stories about the smelt runs of the 70's.?? any info will help- thank you!-- Jim

I JUST GOT BACK FROM THE NORTH SHORE AND THERE IS STILL ALOT OF ICE ON MINNESOTA POINT. TO MUCH TO EVEN THINK OF TRYING TO SMELT. WE HIT THE LESTER AND STEWART RIVERS AND SAW 2 SMELT GET TAKEN AT THE LESTER. WE GOT 6 IN OVER AN HOUR PULLING A 25' SEIN ON THE BAY SIDE OF MINNESOTA POINT. THERE WAS ALSO ALOT OF THICK ICE ON THE RIVER BANKS IN SPOTS. ALSO I SAW A GUY WITH A THERMOMETER TAKE A READING AT THE LESTER AND HE SAID THE TEMP WAS 44 DEGREES. THERE WAS ALSO SOME SMALL CHUNKS ON ICE FLOATING AROUND IN FRONT OF THE LESTER. I THINK AS SOON AS THE ICE LEAVES MN POINT IT WILL BE GOOD EVEN IF IT IS LATE IN THE YEAR. ONE YEAR WE WENT UP OPENING WEEKEND OF FISHING AND THE ICE HAD JUST LEFT THE POINT THAT DAY AND WE DID OUTSTANDING. FILLED A 96QUART COOLER IN 2 PULLS OF THE SEIN. WELL GUY GOOD LUCK!

Smelting is usually happening already, but with the ice piled up along the south shore this spring I don't know if we will be able to get down there in time. We had a serious South/Southwest wind today which we really needed to move this ice out, but it might take more than that. I've got to see in the morning what has changed. Believe me, I'm going nuts just sitting and waiting. As soon as I can get any report up I will do so. Thanks for asking. If the big boat isn't in the water by the weekend, out comes the little one so I can get out there I hope.

Thanks Gary from Deluth for the info. on atlantic salmon. If the water is cold, like 36-38, try #7blue floating rapalas, 6-8# line, and troll shallow water, keep boat in 7-9ft. water with boards. Water must be clear, not muddy, some chop. Gradual shoreline rather then sharp drop is best. Look for mouth's of incoming water, and a shoreline where snow or ice is gone already. Good Luck!!!

Does anyone have an idea of what kind of fish we caught in Superior this past week. I thought they were Browns, but they were long, thin, with black xs across back, mouth was white with the very edge dark, extremely powerful, never jumped but crossed several lines. Serious fighters!!! Thanks, MA

Today temps are in the low 70's. Nice, but mid week they're talking winter again. The smelt run is probably going to be starting in late April, and into early May depending on the weather conditions over the next couple of weeks. Probably the most popular area for smelting is along the shores of Park Point with sane nets. There are regulations on the harvest in your Mn Regs. book too. You usually see people work those areas late at night, and bring your chest waiters.

Was up at the French (Freedom) River on Tues. Tried to catch a looper or two. I had no luck, but saw a few nice ones brought to shore. It seemed like the farther you could cast out the beter chance you had at landing a few. Kamloops,(aka loopers), are a hybrid trout, and are stocked by the DNR.

3-8-2003 SATURDAY, I WENT UP FOR THE FIRST TIME LUPER FISHING FROM TWIN CITIES. I HEARD ABOUT THE ICE, AND WAS INTRIGUED. I WAS THE FIRST ONE TO THE PARKING LOT AT FRENCH RIVER, WALKED DOWN TO THE LAKE IN THE DARKNESS, AND SAW A MOON LUNAR LANDSCAPE, WITH ALL OF THE SHAKE ICE, HUGE PILES, ETC. I SAW TRACKS WEAVING THRU, AND OVER VARIOUS AREAS. I THOUGHT TO MYSELF, HOW CAN ANYONE GO OUT HERE. I HAD MY MILLION POWER LIGHT, AND HAD HEAD LIGHT ALSO, I LET TWO OTHER GROUPS GO AHEAD. THEY LOOKED REALLY COOL IN THE DARKNESS ALMOST LIKE ADVENTURERS. I DRILLED MY FIRST HOLE IN BETWEEN TWO 4 FT PILES OF ICE, AND CAME UP WITH 2 INCH SLABS UNDER THAT, ALL PILED UP. SO I MOVED, AND WENT TO 11 FT. I MADE A NICE VIEWING HOLE, AND SAW AROUND 100 FISH. THEY SEEMED TO BE CURIOUS WHEN I TAPPED THE ICE WITH MY AX. I FOUND THAT THEY WERE LETHARGIC TO A POINT, WOULD APPROACH MY LUPER JIG, AND WAXY, AND TURN LAST MOMENT. I CAUGHT ONE COHO,3 POUNDS, AND A 8 POUND LUPER. SOME OF THESE FISH WERE HUGE. ALLOT OF SINGLES, AND SOME GROUPS OF UPTO 7 CAME THRU. TOTALLY CLEAR VIEWING. I SWITCHED UP 30 JIGS, THEY SEEMED INTERESTED. I FOUND THEY DID NOT BITE ON MOVEMENT, BUT WERE ATTRACTED TO IT. I HAD SEVERAL FAST AND FURIOUS ATTACKS, BUT COULD NOT GET A HOOK SET. THE BIG LUPER, WOULD NOT COME UP, SO I PLAYED HIM CAREFULLY, SO I WOULD NOT LOOK HIM AT THE HOLE. THE COHO, ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES, AND WAS VERY TRICKY TO GET IN. HE CAME RIGHT UP TO THE HOLE, AND THEN DOWN, AND ROLLED. ALLOT OF FUN. THEY TOOK THE WHITE HEADED LUPER, WITH A CHARTREUSE FEATHERED LUPER BUG. I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO SEE THAT THE ICE WENT OUT, AND COULD NOT RETURN TO VIEW THESE HUNKERS FROM ABOVE. PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST ICE FISHING EXPERIENCES I HAVE HAD IN A LONG TIME. TULLIBEE

The loopers are biting. I was up off of the French River last weekend and there was 6 inches of ice with 40-50 fish spotted all day long. (I had a nice one on but lost it) Other guys did much better. The bait of choice was waxies, and the really successful guys were using spawn sacks. (I was using crappie minnows). The fish were in a negative feeding pattern so it was tough getting them to bite but peak lunar times seemed to be the best. Last week the ice went out and I think the guys are shore casting but I'm not sure. The ice is in and out up there and can be very dangerous. Nothing better than ice fishing for those babies though, watching them in 8 ft of clear water is something else!!!

This year looks like it will be a GREAT year to fish cohos and small kings. In the past when we have had a late spring with hard ice like this year the spring fishing for salmon has been exceptionally good. Trolling along the beach front of Park Point in shallow water with stick baits on the surface is the primary bait of choice. If you can get in shallow water and fish the wave troughs which are deeper that is where the smelt hang out and the fish go to get an easy meal. If you tire of the shallow water fishing going deep for lake trout on the bottom in the spring is always a sure thing until the surface water warms up. Normally fishing with downriggers in the 130 to 150 foot depths will provide fast action for lake trout. At this time of the year the bottom temps at this depth are actually warmer than the surface temperatures on the lake. This phenomina stacks the lake trout up on the bottom as water that is 4 degrees celcius is the most dense and heaviest and drops to the bottom. Hence the surface temps on top are cold and the bottom temps are 39.5 degrees F.
