Sounds like Darrin,Randy and Todd are headed up for the evning fishing. The wind is out of the ESE gusting to 20 mph. The surfsce water temps when we went out friday were any where from 44 to 49 degrees. If the guys show up today will have a short fishing report tomorrow. Might try the river down buy the mouth tonight. Went for a walk down where my dad had his lakeshore property. Found plenty of foam bobbers, and anything else that could float to shore. What a shame to see so much liter. Alot of small propane bottles, candles and bottles. Kellie and I will be going down there again to pick up some of the trash and gather a few more bobbers. COOKIE

BUck no morels yet, but thursday or friday should be about the right time. We have not gotten any rain yet and that sure would be nice. Went for a ride today where we always see moose tracks and see how dry the swamps are. Figure if I keep going out there I will see a moose some day. Did see some tracks. I"ve seen tracks out there every time I've been out there. Sure would be cool to see one in the wild. Colleen Hillmen saw one last year just out of town. Ole left today getting ready to go home to Alaska for the summer. Said the best way to see Alaska is drive there. 3200 hundred miles man will that be along drive. WE will try and go some day. The wind has been out of the east all day and there were a few fishermen out there. Fished a little buy the river last night, only one walleye. Maybe try again tomorrow. Good luck on the move. Cookie, Find any Morel mushrooms yet? I haven't been been able to make up north for a few weeks and don't know of any good areas down here to go. We hope to be making our move up north in a month or two, can't wait to get out of the cities and be back in God's country.

I did not fish yesterday as I had pool. We are the champions and had a good time. The greek and Ole did get out but it was very choppy, they ended up with 15 fish. Jerry, Nick and Mark were all excited when they got here and thought the lake did not look to rough. They had a 18 foot alunmacraft? And had to walk it over 2 sand bars, this lake is decieving, when they got out there it was rougher then they thought, they ended up with 12 fish under rough conditions. They were fishing out from Hudecs in 5 feet of water. Sounds like there doing well down buy Rodgers also. The wind is gusty out of the SE. Have not went down to the lake today , but will check it out later. Been a lot of boats out in front of Hillmens but not sure how there all doing. Might be trying to stay out of the wind? Have not saw any boats fishing by any cribs I think it would be worth checking out. You will know when you find them as they eat jigs. I've heard some have no brush left in them, would need to look at them with a under water camara to verify. But was told buy a reliable source some have no brush ? Sure would be nice if they dredge out the mouth a little, not sure why they won't? If they want people at the camp grounds you would think that would be top priorty? Cookie

Well we found some fish, the greek and I went out in the morning and only got 5, We cam in to meet Bob and Tammy and Ole showed up. He got his turkey in Kansas and is now hooked on turkey hunting. The greek ,Kellie, Ole and I wennt out with the greeks 18 foot. We had to move from the front to the back of the boat as we went over the sand bars but were able to make it out. There are a couple stakes and You should go right along them. Make sure your motar is trimed up and go slow. Bob and Tammy followed in there 14 foot bayliner and had know problem. We went to the right in front of Hudecs an 6.6 feet of water and slowley drifted with bobbers and small crappie jigs. Tammy and Bob ended up with 27 slabs befor dark. We end up with 25 befor dark and decided to come in. What a buitiful day on the lake, the wind was non exsistent and had the rare occation of fishing on a calm redlake. It was almost like glass. The sunset was spectacular can not describe the beauty. Most of the fish we caught yesterday were in less then 6 feet of water and man were they scrappie. Will not be fishing today. The greek and Ole will be going out later today.. Gotta go Cookie

Cookie, I am looking to take a trip to Upper Red for a couple of days before opener and wanted to know about the Lake levels and weather you think a larger 18' ranger would have problems getting out on the lake? I have never been on the lake and would also love any info on where is a good place to start looking for some nice crappies. Thanks in advance.

Just talked to a gentlemen coming off the lake, said he did real well in 4 feet of water. He also said he had trouble getting off the lake because the water is so low. Had to wait untell the wind stopped to make it through the channel, less then a foot of water over the sand bars. There are rocks in that area also so if you go out you must be very carefull. Kellie and i fished in the mouth for a little bit one walleye and one lost flu flu. Cookie

hey slapstick; the reason we "have to keep on building up here" is due to the fact that we also have to exist up here. We apologize if some economic development up here spoils a portion of your trip when you leave the metro area... Your post clearly explains why people up here "hillbilly's" often shake their heads at some of the ridiculous comments made by you In-tee-leckt-u-al City Folks.

Why does everyone want to just keep on building . I know that when I go up north to go fishing or hunting .It's a blessing when there is not a huge store or casino around just the wild and that is why I love going to red lake and turkey hunting in places where it is still camping no running water or tv or anything people relying on these things so they can have fun . I like not having a phone ringing or when I go hunting I know I won't bump into anyone . Once you bring these things up to Red it won't be the same it will lose what most of us go to get away from the city .Lake is great catching fish is fun . But just getting out of the city is best part of it.

Just walked down to the lake , what a beautiful day, light east wind, the lake has slight ripples, you can count the sandbars as they accend into the lake. The skys are picture perfect blue, the birds are chirping, the trees are starting to form buds. Heard a few got out last night and had some success. Would be a nice day to be out there. Will be putting other trailor down buy the lake next weekend so will have 2 nice spots down on the lake to enjoy those breath taking sunsets. Putting deluxe fish house over on the river with the picture window facing the river. The greek, Bob and Darrins crew will be coming up next weekend to go after those crappies so will keep all posted. [email protected]

Starting to see more boats hitting the lake. Still looks like some Ice floating way out there. The crappies should move in to feed if the weather stays nice, they will come in shallow to feed and move out with the cold fronts. If I was on the lake I would work in 8 to 12 feet of water as this is where they would stage befor coming in to shallow water. I would think evning, early morning and even night would be better at this time. Hope to get out next weekend, will wet a line buy the mouth of the river this weekend not much water flow so might get some action soon . Cookie

Buck, I wholeheartedly agree with the view you have. I work on a reservation and can attest to the situation you refer to. There are many drawbacks to commercialization and all that but I agree that opening up the lakes to all anglers would benefit the majority without spoiling the tranquility others desire. This is a great resource that with the proper management could rake in the bucks for the reservation as well as the many resort owners in the area. We that have fished URL have enjoyed many days limiting out on Crappie but have also caught our fill of Northern Pike and Walleye on days we miss the slabs. It is a testament to the fisherperson that we continue to see these mumbers of Walleye year after year as we seek the slabs. The amount of fish this lake can support is phenonmenal. My only wish is that someone with the foresight and money to invest into the area can step forward and find the gray line that satisfys people on both sides.

Just drove down to the southern part of the lake by Rodgers and all you see is ice,ice and more ice.We have open water at this this end of the lake as of now. Been watching the pelicans flying around they sure are fun to watch. I beleave they are the biggest flying bird in north america, they go to Florida in the winter and Canada in the summer but some fall in love with red lake and stay here I guess. Today you could see why the lake is named red lake as it had a red hugh when I walked down there earlier. Will take a drive down to the mouth of the river later. Cookie

Fisherman, please read through my post again. I agreed that it would be a great thing for that area to develop economically. I do know the area fairly well as I grew up not far from there, and as a kid my dad & I drywalled many homes on & off the reservation. You may live there for all I know, but my point was much the same as yours, by opening up the lake to all it would create a ton of opportunities for residents. But we've all witnessed development that can go over-board, hence the reference to the Brainerd area. Now granted, some people love what has happened there, and that's okay, but I know others that had to sell property due to rising taxes or assesments that some cities enforced. And they weren't happy about it, nor did they want to sell. The community needed more & better roads or bridges so people could build big $$$ summer homes. Ok, we know Red Lake is far, far from that, but I can't say it's 3rd world either.

Fisherman, feel free to email me at [email protected] if you want. Regardless of what happens, we know the lake is the key to the future for them and lets hope it works out for all. Oh yeah, and a few more camp sites would be nice...

Buck, have you ever been around the south shore drive of red lake? you may want to have a better understanding of the area before you speak about these people losing peace and tranquility. This area is a third world nation when it comes to cleansliness, housing and job opportunity. Comparing the Brainerd area to the red lake res. is apples to oranges. Your response may be heartwarming to people from afar, but, any ecomonomic development to this area would be better than what they now lack. A thousand camp sites would be a good start...

Be careful of what you wish for...A large casino, motels, restuarants, etc. can be nice and would certainly infuse $$ into the Red Lake area. However there is a downside as the people that live there could lose their peaceful, beautiful area as they know it. It's great to have such places as the URL area so one can get away from it all and enjoy the MN outdoors without being in the lap of luxury. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that opening up the entire lake would be awesome, and bringing more revenue to the area would be very good for the people there. Not to mention giving people another great MN destination to enjoy. But I just hope it doesn't get to the point of where it leaves some locals in the dust (Brainerd area lakes). Brainerd (according to friends that used to live there) maybe has gotten to the point of over development, pushing the cost to live or visit there to rival the twin cities. On the other hand the Mille Lacs area appears to have done a pretty good job, no doubt others may think differently, but for the most part people that live there have said they (the locals) have benefited more so then not. Sure there have been hot topics concerning fish limits etc., but the area is still a great place to visit or live and Mille Lacs is one of the best fishing lakes in the nation. Red Lake without a doubt could be one too, just hope that the locals don't lose the beauty and true northern outdoors feel that the area offers.

Happy easter to all. The ice is all being blown to the south end of the lake with this north wind. Have not seen any boats on the lake as of yet,but by this weekend should start seeing some fishermen. The Tamarac river is closed from Hwy 72 up river untell May 9th to protect the walleyes during there spawning. Got the dock put in the river this weekend 24 feet long sure did turn out nice. Brian and Mike will be fishing on the 9th of May. Just went down to the lake and watched another spectacular sunset. It never gets old,all the colors always amaze me the purples and lavenders fading into the pinks blending into the oranges and yellows the sun slowley sinking into the lake, the clouds reflecting those colors. Wish I was a painter, I can draw a little but painting to me would be very relaxing. Been working on a crappie but it is only pencil and does not reflect the awesome colors reflected off there scales. Next time you catch one of these crappies take your time and look at all those colors. Mother nature at her finest. The crappies should be on a feeding binge as I type as forms of plankton bloom, minnows will be finding this new food source, and the crappies should follow if mother nature cooperates. Saw a few pike in some of the channles today they were also splashing around in the river by the reeds. Cookie
