Reports coming in, indicate either afternoons or mornings may produce fish, but it's normally one or the other not both within the same day. Crappie minnows seem to be the best offering, either using the whole minnow on a hook or ball head jig, and using just the head of a minnow on a light jig. Tube jigs have been used with limited success. Some nice walleyes have been caught on Namakan and Sand Point Lakes, but travel over the ice is becoming difficult, due to slush. Best bet is crappie fishing in the area of the Ash River/Kabetogama Narrows. Check for safety before using a vehicle, shorelines are becoming unpredictable. Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report
3/16/03
The weather changed from below zero to
58 degrees above in 36 hours. Nearly all the snow melted over the
weekend.
We now have consistent water on the ice,
however, the ice is still in excess of 36" in most areas.
Four wheelers will assist getting across
the lake, but can't be used on portages. Use caution near ice
ridges.
Crappie bite has improved, some report
getting limits, but the a more common report is most anglers getting
6 or 8 keepers. Lots of walleyes being caught, but in Kabetogama
they have to be returned. Glow in the dark jigs in 25-35' of water
look for suspended crappies and change locations often.
Easiest location is the Ash River
narrows area for crappies. Use the Ash River visitor center for the
best access to Kabetogama or Namakan. Remember, walleyes and pike
both still open in Namakan.

Cold weather has slowed fishing down some.
The crappie bite did pick up between cold fronts and has again slowed
up.
Tube jigs or jig and minnow/minnow head
seem to be the best offering for crappies. Best activity in the area
of Ash River/Kabetogama narrows.
No walleye action on Namakan to report,
but northern pike have been active outside the shallow weed beds.
Snowmobiling is great with all trails and
portages open. More snow expected this week.

Name: City Idiot II Kabetogama_FishingWal eylers I fish Kab fairly regularly and have stayed at a few of the resorts. Harmony beach is a great resort. It changed hands last year and the new owners are coming around. The lake is fantastic. If your plans are to stay a week or more I would suggest you contact a guide Tim Watson. Great guy and a heck of a fisherman. He can teach you alot about the lake fishing and life. Enjoy the lake and area it is great. The May through June and fall are the best times to fish the lake but zI have also had great luck in the middle of the summer. In the summer the reefs in the lake are the spot. Good luck
Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 2/16/03
Walleye and Northern fishermen wrapped up
the 2002 season on Kabetogama with very little fanfare. No limits
reported, but most fishermen had some success. Crappie bite is
happening, but very inconsistent, minnows seem to be the key.
Our winter activity is now focused on
Namakan, this connecting lake is a Canadian Border Lake, so walleye is
open till April 14th and Northern Pike runs continuously. Namakan has
30-38" of ice so we will be ice fishing for big game fish for sometime
yet.
Crappie action generally picks up along
with the temperatures near the end of the month. We will try to keep
this site updated with Namakan results and Kabetogama for crappies as
the reports come in.

Name: Phil Hart KabetogamaKabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 1/20/03 Walleye/Sauger and perch fishing improved mid-week when things warmed up a little. Crappie bite still extremely slow. Anglers reported lots of activity late afternoon and the remainder of the day was slow. Glow jig and minnow seemed to be the most consistent offering. Northern pike being taken by anglers in 12-18' of water. Large sucker minnows are the best choice here. Spearing activity slowed way down with no recent reports of success. Last week's snow of 1 1/2" has helped the lake some for travel, but winds have left lots of bare ice in large open areas.
