Second trip of the year, not impressed. First trip 4 guys, 0 slabs. Second trip 2 guys, 2 slabs. Not bad for a four hour drive. 4 miles out of West Wind, will not be back for a while. Good luck to you who venture back. Bring in extension!! Name: Harry Upper_Red_LakeCookie: It was nice meeting your Brother Warren and his buddie Matt. They seem like nice guys and they have a good sense of humor. Also was nice to meet your wife, you are a lucky man to have such a lovely lady! My son was happy to have met you and can see that you enjoy life much. Our report isn't very good, we only caught three perch and zero crappies, not a good day for fishing!! Talked to some people from Forest Lake and they had the same luck as we did...none. Also talked with some fellows at the gas station in Kelior and they didn't have anything either. They sure were busy at the station..wow..We stopped at Hillmans and asked the lady where to fish and her reply was "your guess is as good as mine!!" Hope to try it one more time this winter and have my son catch a slab!! Harry Name: Arvin Buchholz Upper_Red_LakeI am looking for an ice house (prefer a sleeper),four people,on Upper Red for March 8th. Cusin Curt and his guys only caught 2. Scott and his guys did not catch any crappies. John and his buddy zero so they headed to LOW hope they do better there. We had a little run when we were leaving at 11pm caught 3 and missed 2, Warren and Matt were wiped out from the drive and went to bed.We will have fish for lunch tomorrow,Matt has not fished in 15 years. COOKIE Name: Hook Upper_Red_LakeCookie, can't say that I know the guy, but Coors (God Bless the fine work they do there) employs half the town. Thanks for the info, this is a GREAT forum for information! Name: SCOTT Upper_Red_LakeWAS ON URL LAST NIGHT OUT OF HILLMAN'S. WENT 8 MILES OUT. CAUGHT 25 PERCH AND 5 EYES (1 WAS OVER 5#) BUT NO SLABS. TALKED TO MAY OTHERS AND OUT OF ABOUT 20 OTHERS THEY ONLY CAUGHT 1 CRAPPIE. AT THE FUEL STOP I TALKED TO 4 PARTIES THAT ALL WENT OUT OF WESTWIND AND THEY ALL HAD NO SLABS EITHER. MOVED 4 TIMES AND ALWAYS FOUND PERCH BUT NO CRAPPIES. HOPE THE REST OF YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeHook do you know Dean Dennison? Works at Coors. Glow Jigs, night bite, soft bottom.41/2 miles to 8 miles out.Stay away from plowed banks, do not try and cross pressure ridges with out bridge.Use common sense, stay away from crowds.MOVE MOVE MOVE untell you find active fish. GOOD LUCK COOKIE Name: Hook Upper_Red_LakeFirst timer fishing in MN, me and a couple other Idaho natives are road tripping from Colorado, leaving tonight and plan on fishing throughout the weekend. Cookie you seem to know quite a bit about the lake, any general advice for us? PS, Hook is not a nickname, was born to fish! Name: cooikie Upper_Red_LakeTalk to Don at Hudecs says they have been doing pretty good. Went to an area not being fished and hammered them, would not give location ,just off by himself. Scott and his buddies did not do to well, 4 guys 2 fish. They did not move,If you want these crappies you need to move if your not catching them move. .10 yards or 100 just keep moving and test fishing. Drill extra holes before prime time, they can be checked for fish quickly with vexlar and minnow. When you drop minnow down if there hungry they will show up within minutes. When you find fish ,set up . I don't beleave the auger will chase them away, I have seen friends set up right next to there buddies and continue to catch fish, again if there feeding they can come fast a furious, do not fish two lines when the bite is on its better to concentrate on one. They put up a great fight. When you get them to the hole reach down and grab them do noy horse them in they are called paper mouth for a reason. GOOD LUCK TO ALL COOKIE Name: fisherman Upper_Red_LakeShooks may have a place available this friday night that sleeps up to eight. very reasonable rate. I know a group that had to cancel for friday night, not sure if the room has been taken yet or not. Name: Troy Upper_Red_LakeCookie thanks for the advice! If you get any new fishing reports could you let me know? My E-mail address is [email protected] or you can just post it on the web site. I was wondering if anyone has any of the GPS locations for the crips. Thanks for all the help and wishing all of you good fishing. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeTroy When you stop at Rodgers they will point you in the right derection. The area for the crappie contest will be determenied saturday. I beleave it will be out of waskish. When you get on aggressive crappies they will bite on almost anything, we have had good success with northland forage minnows, northland rattle lures, small teardrops with waxies, demons were real good last year, tried plain hook with minnow not one bite. If your not catching fish after dark move,if you keep hunting for them your odds will increase and you may stumble on to a feeding frenzy. Will be talking to guys in cabin later they were out late last night, Have cusins and brother showing up today so will be hitting it hard every night. Will no more later today on how the bite was last night. COOKIE Name: Daniel Upper_Red_LakeI use small rapala perch for big Crappies hit really good on Upper Red Lake.... 5 feet off.... Name: Daniel Upper_Red_Lakeemail me [email protected] my 10 friends and my dad and i went up there red lake and we caught 180 crappies in 6 hours hit really good and my first time trip to red lake last jan. 31 2003... we re going up there this weekend email me anytime and we can chat.... Name: cooikie Upper_Red_LakeTroy got the nick name from my sister, one of the first words she said. The wife even helped me drag my deer out of the woods this year. What a sweety she is a tremendious help around here and I've Loved her since I first saw her love at first sight. The crappie contest will not effect the evning bite unless your fishing where they hold the contest. I do not no the lake like some of the locals do as they have much more time on the lake then me. I do have alot of friends that come up here and they are a great help. The Greek is my hunting partner and best friend and a expert hunter and fishermen. He is dedicated to fishing and always gets so excited when we find fish. Took the night off from fishing and will be getting ready for the big weekend lots of company coming so should be a blast. COOKIE Name: cooikie Upper_Red_LakeRicky The cribs are man made structures dropped in the lake to attrack bait fish, which in turn attract game fish. The roads go out about 8 miles. Plenty of room to fish. The average size of the crappies is 13" that is a average. I have caugth many fish over 14. A standard bucket is 12inches from outside to outside.I have seen so many over 14" that 12" looks small to me.I would say the ice is over 30" bring a extension. The northerns are closed and walleyes are closed year round as they are trying to rebuild the population. Most crappies feed at night so evning seems to be better, you can catch them during the day. Hope this helps. COOKIE Name: Troy Upper_Red_LakeHey cookie where did you get your nick name. You must be on URL about every day! I think you have the girl that every sportsman wants. You know she will catch the 16 inch crappie we are looking for. You seem to know URL like the back of your hand. How is the crappie contest going to effect the fishing? My dad is going to experience URL for the first time I don't care about loading up on the fish I just wan't him to get a little action and see what a slab really looks like. Any advice We will take. Name: Cliff Upper_Red_LakeThanks Cookie. My freinds were over today. Showed them the note you sent. They beleive me now. Also had pictures from my son in Grand Rapids, today to prove it. Thanks Cliff Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeBuck fishing area will be determined on saturday morning as they do not want people pre fishing in the contest area. I beleave all area merchants have tickets. Matt roads go out up to 8 miles or so. No secret spots have been fishing soft bottom all yesr, seem like walleyes are on the hard bottom. Ricky the fishing has been spotty for most, alot of area is not being fished. The cribs are man made structures dropped in the lake to attrack bait fish which in turn attract game fish, which in turn attract fishermen. The ice is over 30 inches, bring a extension. Crappies and perch are open but northeren are closed and walleye are closed year round at this time. Crappies are night time feeders so evning is better,I would say the average crappie on this lake is 13 inches, that would be a average. I have caught numerous crappies over 14 inches and released many of them. Just to catch them is incredible. GOOD LUCK COOKIE Name: mnhunter64 Upper_Red_LakeThanks Honzy. Are we better off going on the lake from the south such as Rogers or off the upper east such as Hudec's? Name: Honzy Upper_Red_LakeMN Hunter 64, Fish anywhere a few miles from shore and move if your not getting any action. Stay mobile! Name: Honzy Upper_Red_LakeMN Hunter 64, Fish anywhere a few miles from shore and move if your not getting any action. Stay mobile! Name: Ricky Upper_Red_LakeMy Dad and I (first timers) and a couple others are heading to Red for the contest and will stay for the evening. How's the fishing been? How thick is the ice? What kinds of fish are legal to catch now? What's the best time of day for crappies? What are cribs? How far out do the ice roads go? What's the average crappie length? Sorry for being so inquisitive, but there is so little time left. Thanks for all the effort you put into this Cookie. Name: Honzy Upper_Red_LakeThanks Cookie, Good luck with the hook presentation.
