Crappies
Name: denny Upper_Red_LakeCookie thanks for the info. We are coming up this weekend. Going to hit winni, red,and lake of the woods all in three days. Should be a blast but not alot of sleep. Keep you line tight, denny Name: cooikie Upper_Red_LakeWOW what a weekend we were on fish all weekend, we were over run with shacks and portables at least 100 in are area we fished. All the guys cleaned up, some fished catch and release others just quit fishing. There were so many friends of friends I lost track, but all got fish from what i"ve heard. THe wife caught 3 last night and lost a few. I lost 5 on my jig stick and they sure felt nice on that hand line. They always feel huge even when there only 12 inches. I was experimenting last night and going with a small rat finky and the smallest minnows in the bucket. I beleave the small hook hurt me last night as I couldn't land a fish,or they were those 15 inchers I'm after? The wife is still trying to get a 16 inch crappie and needs some luck. So I wish her luck . I have 5 guys out there tonight and will be seeing how they do later on tonight. COOKIE Name: cooikie Upper_Red_LakeLarry and Pam all the resorts have the cordinances, they have maps that show how there laided out. You can find them on the internet if you go to Upper red lake area assn. Name: larry & pam Upper_Red_LakeCan anyone tell a person where the crappie cribs are located? Or get cordinances? Thanks Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeDenny the cribs are all located in 10 to 14 feet of water there are 5 sets and have been fished some. The crappies should be in those areas but only seem to use them at certain times of the year. They were dropped in the lake to attrack crappies and I have had success buy them in the past. COOKIE Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeTerry I only have one sleeper and it is a delux. It is not a party shack,it is set up as if your fishing in your living room. It has 6 holes and fishes 3 men real well or 2 couples. 4 men it becomes a little crowded but is still fishable. It has ceiling fan with 4 lights, kitchen sink, stove with oven and broiler , 2 double bunk beds, toilet with seat, wall to wall carpet, complet paneling ,lights in all the holes. I bring out small stereo am fm, black and white tv that picks up pbs.It has vcr if you bring your own color tv you can watch movies. I have complmentry candy dish and the friday paper with the outdoor section. There is a cribbage board with cards. My email is [email protected]. Name: Ben Upper_Red_LakeArrived Friday about noon, went out of Hillmans to the end of the road. Cought our limit between 5:00 and 10:00 PM. Nice ones. Had to move twice to find them. but wow did they hit when we found them. Name: denny Upper_Red_LakeAre you guy's fishing the cribs? And if not how deep of water are they? Name: JaPa Pines Upper_Red_LakePooder, Tom, Dick, Dean, Billi, Dustin and Duane All have been fishing up at Red Lake for the past three weeks. Wow limit everytime. They bite early in morning and around six at night. Really nice Crappies. They bring them home and give me some to cook at my cabin. We have some happy fishermen. Mookie and LadyBug Name: Terry Upper_Red_LakeCookie do you rent houses??? If so are you going to have any up in March?? Looking to fish towards the middle of March. Please let me know. Thank you Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeFishboy if you don't have fish buy 630pm move 30 yards, fish if you don't mark fish in 30 minutes , move again the crappies feed by sight so use glow jigs, any size any color let us know how you do. COOKIE Name: fishboy Upper_Red_LakeEverybody says u gotta move but how long do you sit before going looking? Im heading up in the next few days for the first time. Any pointers would be greatly appriciated. Name: Pete & Ilene Upper_Red_LakeFishing seems to be spotty. The people in our cabin got their limits the first day. (4 guys) Then the 2nd party came in and fished close to the same area and only got 8 fish. We had a party who rented rooms from us and they had great fishing both days. It seems to really make a difference if you use a vexilar. My email [email protected]. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeMade the rounds last night and most of the guys were catching fish. Scott,Mike ,Bob, Brad and Bob were getting fish and had two buckets and were still catching them when we left at 10 pm. Jerry and his buddy had a dozon and were 75feet from Scott. West and his bunch had a dozon and were 100 yards from Scott. Darrin and his buddy had 15 or so and were 100 yards from Scott to the west.Darrin lost his rod to a pike yesterday.About 9 o'clock last night he caught a pike? and he got his lure and rod back. How many times does that happen. Chris and Gordy had and there buddies had 2 buckets and were 100 yards north of Scott. Mitch, Pat and Jerry went out of Hudecs and cleaned up but could not tell me where they went as there guy wants the spot kept secret. Could not find other groups last night so don't no how they did. The Greek was east of Scott 200 yards and got 1 fish he will be moving his house today to the outside of Scott as the fish seem to be moving to the west and north in a zig zag patteren. HAVE A CRAPPIE DAY COOKIE Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeTHe crappies are relating to the soft bottom, if you fish the sand you catch walleyes. Ole cleaned up last night and went home . Was in a good spot? Moved the sleeper again and have portables poping up all over . Hope they all catch fish. Have a ton of guys up so reports will be flowing trying to keep track of all these guys is a handfull, but will do the bestI can.Gordy got 6 last night, he was 100 yards away from Ole so if your not getting fish you need to move. Any glow jig works well the bite is after dark unless your one of the lucky ones getting them during the day. COOKIE Name: Buck Upper_Red_LakeA ban on lead sinkers seems to be stretch. How many lead sinkers have you or your fathers lost in a lifetime? I'll bet most fishermen would say very few if any at all. I've only lost a couple in my lifetime and that was only when my line broke and I lost the lure as well. So if you start seeing loons swimming around with lures, lead sinkers, and a bunch of line hanging down from their beaks then we may have a problem, but I don't think that's the case. There is a lot of lead on the bottom of our lakes due to many years of duck hunting with lead shot (which is now illegal to use), and that lead will probably remain there forever. So if they ban lead sinkers and 5 years down the road a loon gets lead poisoning, who or what will they blame next? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for preserving our natural resources and protecting our heritage of hunting & fishing, but there are other things within our MN wildlife & habitat that needs our attention before spending time and money on banning lead sinkers. Name: jesse Upper_Red_Lakeon my way up tonight, just wondering if you could give a guy a hand in where to go? what seems to be enticing the bite, etc... any help would be great. first time to red, would love to get some fish. thanks Name: Burnsville high school Upper_Red_LakeWhat do you guys think of the new bill trying to prohibit lead sinkers in all of Minnesota's lakes. Please give us some feed back on this bill. Name: Burnsville high school Upper_Red_LakeWhat do you guys think of the new bill trying to prohibit lead sinkers in all of Minnesota's lakes. Please give us some feed back on this bill. Name: brienmx Upper_Red_LakeMy nephew and I fished Red on 2/17-2/19 and had a blast. We were 5.5 mi. out from Hudec's in 14 ft. (big surprise). The average size of the fish is unbelieveable!! We didn't experience any preference between waxies or minnows or jig style/color. When they came through, they bit!! One thing I would like to elaborate on that I have seen in some of the postings is to pick up your trash and other's if you come across it. Also, we had a guy in a conversion van pulling a house drive within 3 ft. of us and set up 10 yards away. Of course he got stuck and continued to annoy us revving his engine for about a half-an-hour. It's truly a huge lake; give people enough room. Name: ski Upper_Red_LakeI would like people to comment on the following: 1. Does bottom composition make a difference - hard vs soft? 2. Do the crappies move closer to shore as it gets closer to Spring (March) or are they still spread out all over? Thanks for the comments Name: Ben Upper_Red_LakeJust got back from Red. Fished weds.(2/19). Got into the big crappies out of the benzenine? resort. Had an avg size of over 12.5 inches between myself and my dad an an avg weight of over a pound. We caught a limit between 5-8. The crappies were really agressive at 5, hitting buckshot jigging spoons but switched over to the forage minnows w/small crappie minnows at about 6:30. The glow jigs are definitely the way to go. Only caught two walleyes, but got 30 nice crappies. It was really fast, but we were lucky to hit the crappies at the first spot we stopped. If you're not on em keep moving. find someone who is and set up next to them. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeBrian, Glad to see you made it home safe and sound, Went out fishing tonight 1 pizza,1 mickys beer,1 pepsi,1 elvis movie,1 perch,O CRAPPIES. Mitch,Jerry, and Pat fished southwest of us O crappies? They will be out again tomorrow. A lot of people fishing tonight, many of them west of me. Ole was west of me and will be checking in with him tomorrow also Gordy was west of me so maybe they got fish, only time will tell COOKIE. Name: Brian D Upper_Red_LakeI just got back from fishing and can say one thing. Move. We didn't do well untill we moved. The Lake is full of fish just have to find them. It seems the hot spots were moving everyday. One day would be great and the next not a bite. So bring a portable. They hit on mostly minnows and glow jigs didnt seem to matter. Keep changing your jig. It seemed when I changed jigs they looked at it longer. A vexilar is key. Most the time we had to slowly lift and slowly drop the jig and see on the vexilar if they are following or if they respond more to light jigging. Color didn't matter either. Just my opinion but it seems the fish bite when you find them. Just move till you do. Cookie was a great host. The sleeper is really nice and really clean. The guys I brought got his card and will be coming back with there kids so they can expirience crappie fishing at its best. Name: Drake Upper_Red_LakeYesterday on Upper Red was great, the weather was perfect and the fishing was good, fish for our household and fish for our guests, including folks who limited. The fish are picky and some had luck with waxies when the crappies weren't biting on minnows, with a bitetime in the 5 to 8:30pm timeframe. Our fishing license ends on the 28th, but the change in the crappie limits takes effect on May 10th (opener). Name: hammer Upper_Red_Lakeyeh im going up there in about a week or so and id like to now were they are biting know and i would like to now what is killin them.im going up there with my dad and im going with my cousin he is going to the college i want to go to. he is going to St.Cloud state he is playing lacross this semester.i want to go there and play hockey for the huskies well hope to catch some fish . Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeWell Brian,Paul,Dave ,Dick are on there way home with 40 fish or so. They had to move around to find them as my house still will not produce fish.Looks like another moving day in store for me. Oh well thats fishing. The guys that move around are finding fish. If you don"t have a crappie on the ice by 6:30pm you need to move..Even 20 yards can make a difference.Have a group of guys showing up at 3:30 with portables and they will be trying to find them and share there spot with me. I will point them in the right derection and see what happens. Ole only got 1 fish last night. Went and helped Gordy get his holes drilled so will be checking on him later. Mitch,Jerry, and Pat will be stopping buy for pizza tonight at the shack, as the wife and I try are luck in the house that won"t produce fish. COOKIE Name: jeremy Upper_Red_Lakei was just up with my uncles and friends and in two days we brought home 150 crappies all over 12 inches it was awesome Name: Kett Upper_Red_LakeKen and Schmidty are both right. The limit is 10 for the 2003 season, However your 2002 fishing privleges expire on Feb. 28, 2003. What do all you guys feel? is there going to be safe ice in April. I plan on hitting the Rainy River walleye run and combining it with red. Has anybody been on the ice that late, and how's the bite. Name: schmidty Upper_Red_Lakeken you are right about the 2003 limits. but they don/t take effect until the 2002 season is over. Name: mikeoxlong Upper_Red_LakeWow! What a great fishery! I couldnt belive the quality of the fish we took home. I just found the greatest lake in minnesota. Name: Ben Upper_Red_LakeCookie, we are coming up tomorrow for the weekend. Any new advise? Thanks for this neat site! Name: cookie Upper_Red_Lakeshimity Whey to go ,it is unreal when that happens,I had heard reports they did good out there but couldn't verify. Paul and Brian and there to buddys have 14, so it is slow where there at,they are set up for tonight so should do better. It was a little windy yesterday and they were content in the sleeper, but the fish are not biting under the house maybe tonight. THe westwind is the only bar and restraunt in town, I always like the steak sandwich.Hudecs has set ups and 3 2 beer, pizza and sandwiches. If your in portables extra heater is a good idea to have, just in case. Good luck COOKIE Name: ken Upper_Red_Lakeschmitty i believe the 2003 limit has changed to 10 crappies not 15!
