Good morning to all. The wife and I had a had a great dinner in the shack. The fishing was a little slow, I lost 5 on my jig stick with small ratfinky jig, they felt big when I set the hook but they always do on that hand line. I did manage to catch 5 fish 2 were small for this lake 7 and 9 inch let them go to become bigger, good sign? Kelly my wife, only caught 2 fish, missed a few, and had some lookers. She was getting frustrated and it was quite funny, she has become possesed with getting that 16 inch crappie, and wants to try again tonight. Lucky me I guess I have to go fishing. Tried the plain hook with minnow not one crappie, 2 perch they are small but good eating. GUys in the cabin had 3 portables 2 guys got 18 fish, other 2 got 2 fish 20 yards away and would not move as it was very cold. Ron went way out and says he cleaned up had his 15 in minutes and caught and released many many fish, says he caught over 200 fish yesterday counting perch and walleyes. I have to beleave him as when you get on top of them it is unbeleavable. COOKIE

Heading to LOW and fishing 27th thru 2nd. Going for pike out of Warroad and maybe some walleyes. Are the pike in the shallows now? And has it been good? If we go for walleyes where is a good spot fairly close, what and how are they biting? Thanks and good luck to you all.

The walleye fishing is done for the year. Now's the time of year to get a few of those chores on the Honey-DO this done. Don't forget to start thinking about your fishing poles and old fishing line. It's not a bad idea to pull out all that stuff and start organizing it now. It never fails, Spring rolls around the corner and before you know it, it's soft water time again!

The crappie fishing has been slow this past week. Sub-zero temperatures has made for less than ideal conditions. Round, Gull, Upper Gull, and Hubert are still the best bets in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

rolphe,

sorry, but want to comment some more on your submission. i think there isn't anything wrong with the use of gps. sure you can mark a hot fishing spot, but if you fish lakes like lake of the woods, you need that gps, just for safety. my buddy and i, two winters ago, got caught in a white-out on our snowmobiles after an afternoon of fishing. we were six miles from shore, and when it is nice out, the shoreline is just a little strip on the horizon, in the snow or fog every direction looks the same. after that day, i refuse to go out without my gps.

rolph, i agree with some of what you are saying. quite frankly, i don't think it all that realistic, simply because of the lack of enforcement officers around minnesota. they have to cover such big areas, and have to watch for so much already, i find it hard to believe they could dedicate themselves to checking for locators and such on certain lakes, besides the ignorance of many of the fisherpeople around. half the time they don't even know what lake they are on. i had a friend that i fished with all last year, and just found out that he thought the limit on walleyes was 3! and he fishes quite a bit, what about the flocks of "summer folk" that make their way to our area every year with a lot less fishing knowledge? i think we need to increase the number of enforcement officers, but with budgets and the like, it is not a realistic goal either. i have yet to use much of the high tech tools out there, but do rely on my gps, gas auger, and atv. but it always amazing some of my friends that i can go out and be successful in harvesting fish, without the rest of the stuff. i still paddle my john boat out onto the lake and catch walleyes and the like. nothing annoys my buddies more than when they ask something like, "how deep of water were you in?" and i say, "i am not sure, about 12 feet?" i mean how in the hell can someone catch fish without graphing them and knowing the depth and water temp, etc??? all i tell them is that people for thousands of years did without that crap and still caught fish, and so can i. i may not be as successful as someone with a vexilar sitting next to me catching crappies that are suspended, but i will still catch some, and have some pride in knowing i did it with my skills as a fisherman, not any old chap that can make their bait meet the fish on the vexi.

FISHED OUT OF LYONS SLEEPERS THE 20TH THRU THE 23RD. 4 GUYS, CAUGHT OVER 100 FISH. FISH FRY EACH NIGHT AND BROUGHT OUR LIMIT OF WALLEYS HOME. THE HIGH PRESSURE AND COLD MADE THEM A LITTLE SPOTTY AT TIMES BUT THE SIZE OF THE FISH CAUGHT MADE UP FOR THE STEADY ACTION AS WE HAVE SEEN IN THE PAST. TAKE YOUR VEXILR AND GO AFTER THOSE SUSPENDED FISH. ODDS ARE THEY ARE WALLEYES AND THEY FOR THE MOST PART ARE ACTIVE FISH THAT WILL BITE. ANYWHERE FROM 4'TO 12'OFF THE BOTTOM. BUCKSHOTS, JIGGING RAPALAS AND GLOW WEASELS WERE ALL PRODUCTIVE.

Charles red has been good .go with #4 or #6, try different crappie lures if there finicky go small. They come from the bottom most of the time, when they are real aggresive they will attack your presentation on the way down. Move if your not getting any untell you find them they have been in 13 to 14 feet of water, it is a big lake you have to hunt for them. There is no magic lure other then glow as crappies feed on sight more then smell. If your not getting fish move move and move.GOOD LUCK COOKIE

I am a local guy looking for a lead on some good pan fishing holes or locations. My father, who always heads out to the Dakota's hunting the large perch and bluegills/sunnies, has decided to come to Brainerd instead of the Dakota's this fishing trip. I would really like to get him on some big perch or blue gills if at all possible. He has never ice fished in the Lakes area and I believe that if he has some luck he will forget about those Dakotas. Snowmobile will not work. I parked near the camp ground drive way. I have talked to a friend of mine who knows the land owners around the lake. He was told, that any one who parks illegally will be towed by becker county Sheriff dept. Now that makes things more difficult. I would like to try fishing again but I can't get out until Thurs.

MNis4me You should bring a extension I have been using mine for 2 weeks. The crappie contest is sponsored by the Upper Red Lake Area Association,URLAA. and the North Beltrami Sportsmen's Club. THe cost for the contest is 20 dollars for adults and 5 dollars for kids under age 12. IT starts at noon on saturday untell 3pm. There will be quite a few venders on the lake in the contest area selling food and beverages hot coffee and food etc. There will be plenty of room to fish as the contest is in a inclosed area, a small portion of the lake. Good luck fishing the weather is predicted in the twenties. There is a web site about the contest.
