Fishing Reports for Minnesota Fishing-Archive
Name: Oly Mille_LacsHey Pissed Off Fisherman. You are not alone. I think that there are some resort owners up there that just don't get it. I'm personally going to make an effort to seek out the ones that do and "give" them my business. As for myself I'll never go back to Agate Bay Resort again. Name: MNis4me Upper_Red_LakeHi cookie You do a great job keeping everyone posted on the fishing. Thanks We are going up Friday and Saturday, can you tell me how thick is the ice? (extention needed?) Also what is the contest you are talking about? We come up once a year for a great get-away and I think we picked a busy one. Mn Name: JERRY 1 Detroit_Lakes_FishingWiener, You have to walk in!But, you can try to snowmobileif you want. Park and walk along the tracks its tough but you need this to keep the traffic down. Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeHave not talked to guys in cabin yet so not sure how they did. Will find out later.Curt and Darrin went to LOW and came back last night to try for some crappies. I would like to thank Darrin for selling me a truck with a plow at such a good deal sure will come in handy around here.Need to thank the greek again for driving it up here. Will see you this weekend. Shaping up for another big weekend plus the crappie contest is saturday noon to 3. The weather looks like it will be nice saturday so would expect a large turn out.Last year was cold but still had a large turnout.Fun to see all the kids trying to catch that big one. Best of luck to all. Brother from Chicago is coming for the contest so will be rooting for him as he is a expert fishermen. He won the old sheephead contest one summer and thinks his luck will continue.Time will tell. COOKIE Name: Matt Upper_Red_LakeFive of use fished upper red on 2-21 and 2-22 and had a great time. caught 37 the first night and 24 the second. Fished out of Hudecs. Time to crank up the heat!! It sounds
like the next 2 nights are going to be frigid (near 20 below). I'm
not to happy about that, but I know it won't be around much longer.
One thing we don't have to worry about is thin ice. If we keep making
ice at this rate, I'm going to have to get the extension for the
auger. Right now the ice is close to the powerhead, so I'm guessing
it's about 38 inches or so.
The crappie fishing has been pretty good!
I've still been renting one of my houses out and I wish I would have
been fishing crappies all season. The biggest that has come up so far
has been 13 inches and we have seen a few of them around that size.
All the fish have been taken in 30-40 feet and have been caught using
rosie reds and small crappie minnows. I've heard other reports from
around town that are pretty similiar. I don't think it really matters
where you go, it's that time of year where they are going pretty well
on most lakes. There are plenty of crappie spots in the area, so take
your pick and grab your stick!! Upper Gull, Wilson Bay, Steamboat
Bay, Booming Out Bay, Love Lake, Roy Lake, Gladstone, Hubert, Cullen,
Perch, the list is endless just pick a lake and fish!!
As for baits to use, I would suggest using
the standard small crappie minnow on a #8 hook. If you are using a
vexilar, you don't need a bobber but if you haven't changed with the
times you should try a slip bobber with a couple pieces of split
shot. As we get closer to spring and they start moving closer to the
reeds I like to use Eurolarvae on a small ice fly. Make sure you
don't go any heavier than 4 lb. test or you will be missing some
bites.
Did someone say TURKEY? Maybe I'm just
hearing things, but my buddy and I got drawn for the Minnesota season
and we are already geeting pumped up!! I know there are plenty of you
fisherman that enjoy calling the gobbler so I figured I would throw
this out there also. We are having the Central Minnesota Gobblers
banquet on Sat. March 1st at the Nisswa American Legion. It is
FUNdraiser and even if you don't win a gun, you will have FUN!! For
ticket info, you can call me or email me and I will give you the
details!!
Tip of the week: You only have 5 days
left before you need a new fishing license and you also have to have
your permanent fish houses off!!
Have a nice week,
Dan Eigen
Gull Lake Guide Service www.walleyedan.com [email protected] 218-963-0422(h) 218-839-5598(c) 9287 Anderson Rd. Lake Shore, Mn. 56468 Name: denny Upper_Red_LakeCookie thanks for the info. We are coming up this weekend. Going to hit winni, red,and lake of the woods all in three days. Should be a blast but not alot of sleep. Keep you line tight, denny Name: Rolfe Debatable_IssuesAt age 50, I've been fishing for some time. And I have to say that I have been the beneficiary of the advancement in tackle, technique, and technology. I have the locators, gps, books and seminar tapes, boats, gas augers and portable fishhouses. These items have helped me, along with countless others, increase the odds and take of fish. I've been at it long enough to see the odds go up for those who employ at least some of the gadgets. But I've been at it long enough to see the quality of the fish taken decline, and the diminishment of the overall experience inspite of, and perhaps because of the gadgets, and the shear increase in the numbers of people harvesting this limited resource using many of these tools. I fondly remember as a kid, the numbers of nice sunnies and crappies that I could take even in the winter with a single hook, black dacron line, a hole opened with a spud, and God Forbid, no fish locators! "Where are they bitin?" one would ask. "Off the point and two and half arm lengths down." might be the reply. Good enough! While the public, who's collective mindset driven by the natural desire for fishing success and in a large part by intensive marketing by gadget manufacturers and distributers, would never support banning the use of locators and the like, it would be interesting to see an substancial increase in experimental Heritage Lakes, where the fishing style and substance would be limited to the methods and means commonly used prior to the introduction of the locators and gps units at the very least, and perhaps including the banning of outboards and snowmobiles. Reasonable exemptions or variences would probaly have to be made to riparian homeowners. Minnesota has had much success with other more Primitive game havest schemes such as the Muzzleloader and Archery seasons and the exclusion of motorized craft in many of the BWCA lakes and streams. What would be the harm in trying to enhance the fishing experience, both quantitative and qualitative, by going back to the future on a smattering of lakes here and there statewide to the vast majority of Minnesota Citezens could find a lake near their homes where they could experience fishing the way it used to be, at a slower and quieter pace, where gamefish have not been habituated to the sound of motors and transducers, and where there is an equality by design, for all who choose to fish employ more primitive methods, whether the fisherman be rich or poor.
Name: Hortundra Cass_LakeHey Mike...The Mayfly hatch in the Cass Lake area usually occurs around the last ten days of June. It tends to last the better part of 2 weeks. Its gonna happen between June 20th. and the 4th of July. Name: girlguide Lake_of_the_WoodsRoss, fish out of Arnesen'a rocky point has been AWESOME! Hope you catch the big one if you are looking for a good guide you should ask for BC, FNG, or the nail bender. these guys are very good and will put you on some fish. Good luck Name: cooikie Upper_Red_LakeWOW what a weekend we were on fish all weekend, we were over run with shacks and portables at least 100 in are area we fished. All the guys cleaned up, some fished catch and release others just quit fishing. There were so many friends of friends I lost track, but all got fish from what i"ve heard. THe wife caught 3 last night and lost a few. I lost 5 on my jig stick and they sure felt nice on that hand line. They always feel huge even when there only 12 inches. I was experimenting last night and going with a small rat finky and the smallest minnows in the bucket. I beleave the small hook hurt me last night as I couldn't land a fish,or they were those 15 inchers I'm after? The wife is still trying to get a 16 inch crappie and needs some luck. So I wish her luck . I have 5 guys out there tonight and will be seeing how they do later on tonight. COOKIE Name: cooikie Upper_Red_LakeLarry and Pam all the resorts have the cordinances, they have maps that show how there laided out. You can find them on the internet if you go to Upper red lake area assn. Name: SlipBob Lake_of_the_WoodsWent out the 14th and 15th(sorry for being a little late) but on friday we caught 132 walleyes and saugers, kept 21, 4 really nice keeper jumbo perch and 2, 5 pound burbets and on saterday we only caught 10 walleys and saugers, 2 keepers and lost a perch. we were fishing out of longpoint about a mile away from the twin islands. Anything gold worked tipped with a chub. Name: larry & pam Upper_Red_LakeCan anyone tell a person where the crappie cribs are located? Or get cordinances? Thanks Name: Denny Mille_LacsWell another ice fishing season is over! I spent almost every day on Mille Lacs fishing walleyes and perch. There was no comparison to last winter. Moving perhaps 40 times on mud flats, deep rocks, shallow rocks, gravel etc. I caught about 150 walleyes and 200 perch. I released four fish over 28", 100 walleye between 16" and 28", keeping about 40 14" to 16" slots. The walleyes were very fat due to the bumper perch hatch last year. The perch I caught were amazing, they provided me with fish all Winter. Most were 10" to 12" and weighed about a pound. I fished mostly with a underwater camera that was positioned between 5' and 6' away from my jigging line. The fish seem to spook if camera is any closer. Set lines with shiner or rainbow minnow would catch a few fish early in year, but by mid January I used one line. Jigging with gold or silver spoons with a minnow head. While watching hundreds of fish on the camera I noticed what spooked the fish. If you jigged it hard they would spook. Just twitching the bait or rolling it on the bottom worked best. I look for another good year on the water this season, but no where near the 2002 year. 25 fish a day instead of 50 to 75 still sounds good to me. GOOD LUCK FISHING Name: Shogren Whitefish_ChainIt is still a good time here on the Whitefish Chain as the Lake Trout bite continues on Big Trout Lake. Fish are responding to shiner minnows by jigging or tip-ups in 45-85 feet of water. Bring your locator as most fish are suspended a ways off bottom. Fish still seem to be most active early in the morning and than again in the evening hours. There have been some fish caught in the teens and some reports of even bigger fish being lost. You can still easily drive on from the access on the east end of lake, but most action happening from middle of the lake to the west. Crappie action seem to be fair on Loon, Bertha, and Dagett lakes. Most action seems to be after dark in anywhere from the 20-30 foot range with fish suspending off the bottom 3-5 feet. Use crappie minnows and glow jigs for best results. Also some good sunfish action happening on Greer lake just east of Crosslake about seven miles. Move around a lot and fish the weed beds from the 7-15 foot range. It is still a good time to get up here in the lakes area as there are a lot of lakes to fish and the pressure is not as bad as in some areas of the state, so get out there and Good Luck. Name: C-note guy Lake_Minnetonka2/22/03 . Great Year on Tonka, I was fishing walleyes all winter we ended with over 50 lbs for the winter. I caught 2 lbs. on the last day. We had great luck in 17-20 off the weeds but only sandy bottom. Aqua View only thing I will say.
Best wishes Bill Name: cookie Upper_Red_LakeDenny the cribs are all located in 10 to 14 feet of water there are 5 sets and have been fished some. The crappies should be in those areas but only seem to use them at certain times of the year. They were dropped in the lake to attrack crappies and I have had success buy them in the past. COOKIE Name: scott Debatable_Issuesi was just reading the dnr info pamphlet for boundary waters fishing. how the hell does the dnr even imagine the numbers they come up with for harvest tonnage? they say they have a target harvest of say 275000 pounds of walleye, and that there was 395000 pounds harvested last year!! did they stop every fisherman who was on the lake at every landing on lake of the woods for the whole year?? how ridiculous it is that they publish these numbers and pay people to come up with these numbers when the money from license sales, etc could go to much more important issues with wildlife. plus they only monitor one portion of the lake, what about the tonnage harvested in manitoba and ontario? what a joke. Name: fishboy Upper_Red_LakeEverybody says u gotta move but how long do you sit before going looking? Im heading up in the next few days for the first time. Any pointers would be greatly appriciated. Name: Pete & Ilene Upper_Red_LakeFishing seems to be spotty. The people in our cabin got their limits the first day. (4 guys) Then the 2nd party came in and fished close to the same area and only got 8 fish. We had a party who rented rooms from us and they had great fishing both days. It seems to really make a difference if you use a vexilar. My email [email protected].
