Fishing was pretty good yesterday until the wind blew everyone off the lake. On our side of the lake we are fishing in 31 to 35 feet of water about 2 miles out. Using a chartrese green jigs or any other green lure right on the bottom. Minnows is still the bait the fish are prefering. You can still drive anywhere on the lake with 4 x4 or a big shovel and 2 wheel drive. Had some people get hung up on some real rough ice yesterday. After some shoveling, they were able to get off. It was blowing the snow so hard we didn't have any clue of where to go looking for them and they didn't have a GPS. We told them to stay put as soon as the blowing snow subsided we would come get them. They made it off before we could go looking for them. Just remember, there are some ice heaves out there and these patches of very rough ice that now has snow blown over them. BE CAREFUL!!!

Ricko let me no if your up here and we can hook up 15 for 2 double run for 10, jack of knobs for 11 good luck, glad you caught fish they are beauties arn't they. Were out of fish so will have to try and land a few myself. Sounds like Harry might come up with his son. He fishes with the old jig stick, no vex ,and little wood stove like stepping in to the past, when I first went ice fishing. Looks like a gorgeous sunrise wish I was looking out the picture window in the shack but Rick and Darlene are using it. Hope there enjoying the sunrise. Think I'll fire up the sled and zip out there in a bit see if I can get to shack with 2 wheel drive truck. Darlene had never seen a fish come through a ice hole. I've spoiled her in my fish house hope she gets hooked. COOKIE

Here's a few quick tips for them finicky crappies ,try starting your vechicle, somtimes this will intice a bite, watch that bobber if a sled or vechicle passes buy this also can make them take a nip, it will be a quick nip but if your paying attention you might be surprized. If there following your bait but won"t bite take your index finger and pull the line up as slow as possible, when they get to that transition zone, they will take one whack at it, set the hook, you should feel the bite on your finger. GOOD LUCK TO ALL LET ME NO IF THESE TRICKS WORK FOR YOU COOKIE

Mille Lacs? What a Joke. 10,000 anglers fishing for the 6 Walleyes inside the 4 inch Slot size.People would take care of over zealous over aged resort owners. By simply going to lakes that you can catch fish you can eat. Not throw back. Resorts would close. Let the Lake get a balance Back to it. Plenty of Walleye Lakes in that area. Someone in the area has Co. Lake Maps.

I agree that walleyes should be rid of on URL because there are not as many lakes in MN that has thousands of crappies and alot over 12 inches and if we do not get rid of walleyes the crappie population will go down then we will probably have to wait for another 5-20 years til the population of crappies rise if we all dont keep any walleyes. so the limit of walleyes should be unlimited then crappies 15 (will be 10 starting spring) then the crappie fishing will be awesome all the times on URL. Where else can you catch your limit or more than your limit and the biggest is 15 inches? anywhere else ... no i dont think so if you did youre just BS us. anyways hope the crappie population will continue well. GOOD FISHING

Cookie thanks for all the fine reports you've been putting on this site. I know all the guys I fish with look at this site daily! We were there up there Feb 7th and 8th and did go home with our limits largest one 14 1/2 and many in the 13 inch size. We were using red and blue glows baits that worked well, also waxies three to a bait and it worked. Lost my butt in cribbage during slow times but hope to get that back this weekend + more of the great fishing the url has. I'll post when i get back so keep up the great reports Cookie they make my day!

Sully, its kinda hard to give info to a guy if you dont know em. Iread your entry in the Pipestem page about the guy dying. He was my boss. Good guy, loved to fish the Pipe,He was from Mhd. by the way. Years ago I fished Melissa out in the middle, in thirty five feet and absolutely knocked the crappies.I never logged that spot(exact) into the old brain stem so I never went back havent you done good on Pipestem yet every time we go we kill em,all big, no throwbacks. Were going Thurs. Feedback if you can

Hi Sulley I know how you feel about not caching fish, or what lake to go to. You are lucky, I think because you have more lakes within 50 miles of where you live than we have in the whole state. We have to go a minimum of 70 miles to find lake withfish. We had a lot of Pheasants a few years ago, but 2 hard Winters took a lot of them. I fished down there over New Years and we caught more fish in 3 days ice fishing, than I caught ice fishing here in the last 20 years. Cliff

I would have to say that upper red is a great fishery with or without walleye, as you can see, lake of the woods classes have been very small lately but give it 3 or 4 years and that will be the lake to be at. I also believe that upper red is so vast and such a small portion is fished there is no way for the large population of crappies to fall to quickly. Over 3/4's of upper red and all over lower red can not be fished by us and if their are fish where we are they are all out there too. You have to remember their is vast water that has yet been explored or harvested for crappies. Let the walleyes come on but give it a couple years and it will have a lot of big trophy walleyes and number. They are allready on the rise and keep coming. Let lake of the woods be walleye. Red can be known for what it is now. The CRAPPIES!!! Good Fishing

We were out last weekend (2/7 - 2/9) about 2 miles north and east Garrison and about a mile out onto the lake. We caught a nice 26" 6 1/2 pound walley and a 22 inch 4 pound walleye. We caught 5 beautiful perch. Three of them were 12 inches and FAT! We also caught one eel pout. More importantly we had a ball staying with a guy we know up there. It was a great time. First time out for me, but not the last.
