I and a friend are renting a house out of Fisher's resort this Monday. Seems like the fishing is real slow! I plan on alternatives and will bring my portable and roam the flats for awhile if the house does not give us any luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated, be nice or don't send it! I will load up on all the normal bait options! Let me know if you had any luck this weekend fisher people!

Cookie: Sorry this took so long to get back to you but since I went fishing yesterday I had to get caught up with my work. My wife and I want to thank you for guiding us to a good fishing spot!! We ended up catching 15 BIG slab crappies. For each one we caught we missed 3, so as you can see we had a lot of action. It was an excellant trip and far exceeded my expectations, we had a fun time and really enjoyed ourselves. For the people reading these postings, I need to tell you that COOKIE is really a nice guy and true sportsman! If he tells you the fish are biting you can believe him. I have never met a fisherman like him before. He is willing to tell you all that he knows about fishing, such as where to fish and the color hook etc. He even told me I should bring my extension along for the auger which is a good thing to do because there is about 30 inches of ice. If he tells you something you can believe him, he is truly a good person. Once again thank you Cookie for a good time from both of us and I hope to come up there in a couple weeks with my son because he has a day off from college. In the sport...Harry

Our group fished out of the West Wind January 24 & 25 with 6 guys in two shacks. It was slow; 10 crappie in the two days. It all depends on your location and timing because they are catching them around the shanty town when we talked to people at night having grub and brew at the West Wind. All of the crappie we caught were nice, 12.5" to 14", we just wish we'd hooked a few more. We did pull in a 34.5" Northern on a tip-up the first day. Not many walleye, just 5 little ones caught and released. It's a great lake and well worth the experience. Another group of guys from here were up the week before us and caught 50 crappie, all nice sized.

Nashville,

Hubert is an excellent panfish lake at that time of the year. The weed edge is about 12 feet deep then. There's some good fishing to be found on the Boy's Camp Bar. It's a sunken island that tops out at 6 feet. It's located on the northwest end of the lake, right out in front of Camp Lincon. You'll see of the sailboats. You can't miss it. Panfish leeches and a small bobber are all it will take.

Take Care! JOHN

Updated 1-29-03

This was a difficult week in the Brainerd Lakes Area. We are still feeling the loss of Cliff Wicktor. Cliff was the co-owner of the S&W Bait Shop. Cliff and his wife Sherree, have made the S&W Shop into the premier Bait Store in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

This week's frigid weather put a clamp on the fishing as well. The best crappie bets are still Upper Gull, Gladstone, North Long, Gull, and Round lake. The fishing should improve with the warmer weather predicted for next week.

The walleye action was tough in the Brainerd Lakes Area this last week. Gull, North Long, Pelican and Lake Edwards are still your best bets for some fish, but the size hasn't been close to the caliber of previous weeks. Most of the fish taken this last week were caught in deeper water. With 32 to 45 feet of water being the most productive depth. The deep water Islands and saddle areas have been producing the most fish. A shiner minnow on a tip-up has been a tough combination to beat.

We will miss you Cliff!

Was at Scenic Bay the 17th, 18th and 19th. The wind blew pretty hard and a short storm come in. Fishing was not good, the (6 hole) ice house could have been better, but sufficed and Tim trys very hard to assist his guests in catching fish. He checks on you quite often and reports what is happening around the lake. But I sure can't blame Tim, Tina or Scenic Bay for the fishing. I find it amazing how someone can blame someone or something because fish don't bite. If you can't have fun ice fishing, fish or no fish, better not go.

Hillmens bridge was down for about 1 hour yesterday, the pressure ridge heaved up so it took some manaual labor to repair, mother nature can realley pay havoc. The fishermen need to be patiant when things happen like this. These guy risk there lifes to repair these areas. A bunch of bitching does not help. I drove out at 6:30 pm and there was some standing water but made it over fine.It is scary driving through water but the crack is covered up.COOKIE

Went up to URL 1-30-03. Arrived at 1430 at Hudec's and found out pressure ridge had given way. Went out of West-Wind. Got six and many walleye. Nice to see the Walleye coming back. The ridge should be fixed by morning but I wouldn't count on it. We 4X4'd across from West-Wind's road to Hudec's and had to cross 6-8 inches of water near the ridge. Call before you go. The fish are biting around 1700. Not sure when they stop since we only got six. Nice weather, don't dig in until you find em!!!

ok, here goes. A sauger is basically a walleye, they have spots on their dorsal fin and no white spot at the tip of their tail fin. They dont grow quite as big but taste just as well. You catch a lot on Woods. And the Lake it selve is a very large and vast lake, almost nothing around you once you get out there, but the surroundings are beatiful, hope you have a blast and catch some fish, look for those saugers, youll get quite a few of them.

Will be heading to the big lake on 2/13 and have always thought the north side mud was best in late ice season. Anyone know any different? Also would appreiate any ideas on rentals on the North shore. As far as where to fish, does it matter on the big lake in late winter, what is better mud, rocks, gravel, sand? Any thoughts by the experienced would be appreciated. Thanks...

Some areas are having a day bite from what Im hering .I mostley go out in morning and evning but where Im fishing did have a good day bite for a while. If your fishing for northerns with large bait it seems to chase the crappies away so Ive stopped fishing for them out of my house. YO FISHER PEOPLE! You can't blame a resort for you not catching fish! The bite is slow this winter. The weather has been crazy! No snow now, wettest summer we have ever seen, too many people cruisin' on 4-wheelers,:whatever///excuse/bla.bla.bla. Don't you think the resorters would want to put you on fish! Duh! One person blames the DNR. The biggots blame the tribe. There are so manny eyes' in the lake there are some for everybody. Have fun, fish, if ya don't catch fish who cares. You won't starve to death. OK ... why all the negativeness in here. It has been a long time since a person has had to fish to sustain a healthy family so...we are in this for the fun. As far as blaming a resort and the placement of thier houses is the reason for a slow or non bite...we'd have to blame em all, there isn't much of a bite on the entire lake. I think we should blame the weather more than anything. This has been one of the most uncosistent winters I have experienced in several years. Warm one day below zero the next and pressure changes are wild, the fact that there is no snow on the lake can't help. Keep fishing but, try to do it for the fun. If you rented a house and don't feel like it was worth what it cost, I think you should take it up with the resort as well as your post here, it's the only awy it will change. We have been up every weekend since ice was thick enough and things are just slow. When we do catch em they are too big and are huggin the bottom at around 25 ft. Once in awhile we get a straggler cruisin ten or eleven feet under the ice. Just keep workin em and hope for a better bite but, first and foremost Have a GOOD time and try to take your kids fishing. Good luck to all and we'll see you out there
