just got back and fishing is real slow, stayed there 2 days and got 4 eyes and 1 perch between 6 guys, no eyes being in the slot. best bet is to sleep during the day and fish nights, even the nights are slow but atleast you get SOME action. good luck

Most of the Brainerd Lakes have 10-15 inches of ice, and with only 1-2 inches of snow, a small car or truck can get to just about anyplace on most lakes. What a great winter for ice fishing.

The crappie bit has been strong on most of the Brainerd Lakes. Top producers have been Upper Cullen, Gladstone, North Long, Gull, Upper Gull, and Lake Hubert. The bulk of the fish are suspended near shore points, located close to deep water. Most of the crappies have been in 20-34 feet of water. Punch a bunch of holes and use your electronics to spot these suspended fish. During the day the crappies will be closer to the bottom. Evening and early morning light conditions will cause the fish to rise up and become more active. Glowing demons tipped with small crappie minnows have produced several nice catches this week.

The walleye action is still strong in Brainerd Lakes Area. Gull, North Long, Pelican and Lake Edwards on been producing good size along with numbers. The community spots have slowed with the truck traffic so staying mobile has been a key. But with the great ice conditions, this has not been a problem. Most of the fish are being taken in 16 to 35 feet of water. Deep water Islands have been key locations. Shiner minnows on continue to out produces most other baits.

The Jaycee's Ice tourney is coming this month on the 18th. Support a good cause and have a great day in the process!! Take care until next week!!

P.S. How about a Brainerd Guide Gift certificate this year for that special someone

We are coming from Menominee, Michigan for the fishing derby. What we are wondering about is how you get your fishing spot? Are you assigned a spot or do you just pick one out? If you pick your own spot, do you have to get there at daybreak to get a decent spot? Also, what kind of water depths are in the derby area? How are the ice conditions right now? We would appreciate any information any one can offer. Thanks, Mike

Friday 1/3 Two of us caught 7 crappie, all between 12-13”. Lost several more on the way up and at the hole. Caught a few walleye as well. The hottest bite was from 4:45pm to 6:15pm, but a couple of stragglers were caught up until 10pm.

Saturday 1/4 Mostly fished in the evening again. Caught one crappie around 9am however. The bite was slower, but we caught another 7 crappie, all measuring 12-13”, between 4:30pm – 10:00pm. The fish were extremely finicky and slow to bite. Small gigs and tiny minnows were all that would entice them to bite. Caught one 4 pound walleye and a few smaller walleye.

I haven't been in Minnesota for awhile but if I was...

Parley Lake between Waconia and Chanhassen (hwy 5) has (at least it did) some nice size Crappies. Real chunky too. Waconia has nice crappies too but most people fish the wrong part of the lake. I like the east-southeast corner. There's a pretty deep bowl with about 25-30 feet of water maybe 3 blocks walk out. I used to fish 2.5 to 3 arms length. Get some walleyes a few times too with those Rapala ice jigs tipped with a perch eye. Harriet in Minneapolis is underrated. Big perch on the (again) east-southeast corner 2-3 blocks out on a hump about 12-15 feet deep.

Fished the north end of the lake over the weekend and found 13+ inches of ice and very few pressure ridges past 1\4 mile out. Fished in 26 feet of water and caught a 20" and 21". Not to much action. Did mark a few fish off the bottom but had a hard getting them to bite. It sounds like the farther you get out the better the action. Good luck to all and enjoy the 45 degree weather this week.

We were on Red for the first time this last weekend. Got on the lake by 11:00 AM both Friday and Saturday. Plenty of nice fish were caught both afternoons. Don't really have any information on the evening bite because we were off of the lake by 4:30-5:00. Keep drilling holes until you find a soft bottom.

Dave, Just heard that they're expecting a near record crowd (around 13,000) for the contest. In my experience on Gull and in the contest, most walleyes are caught on jigging spoons or raps tipped with minnow heads. I've had good luck with glow, but I may try rattles this year. I think it has more to do with picking a good hole than specific baits though. I've seen some real pigs come from the deep edge of the fishing area. That's where I usually am. Hope that helps ya! Have a good one.

Just came back from Mille Lac's, fish'in on the South end(Mcquid's, Dickie's)is slow! If I was you, bring your portable fish houses with and fish out of them during low light periods and stay in the house during the night. It seems the peaple catchin the fish are on the mud. Good luck let us all know how ya do.
