Please don't throw the small sunfish on the ice!! That's my lake too. If you don't enjoy catching small ones, move and try to locate some bigger fish. Catching and releasing fish is more of a rush than the old mentality of keeping eveything you catch. That's hard for some people to comprehend, but think about it. If everyone goes out and keeps everything they catch, what are you going catch in the years to come? Freezer stockers and feed the neighborhood fisherman need to change their ways. Please respect our Resources. Thankyou.

Tip_Story

just a small story, IT WAS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO,DURING THE SPRING TIME,3 FRIENDS AND I WENT ON A CAMPING/FISHING TRIP TO THE BOUNDERY WATERS AREA,JAMES BAY,LAKE SAGANAGA? ANYWAYS,WE SET OUT ON OUR CANOES IN SEARCH OF A CAMPSITE,WE FOUND A NICE ISLAND,WITH A GREAT AREA FOR CAMPING,AND FISHING! SO WE SET UP CAMP AND STARTED FISHING MY FRIEND GREG HAD IMMEDIATLY CAUGHT THIS HUGE WALLEYE,I WOULD GUESS HIM AT ABOUT A 12 TO 13 POUNDER!EASILY!HUGE!FISH OF A LIFETIME FOR SURE!WELL ANYWAYS GREG TOLD FRIEND TO GO TO TENT AND GET THE CAMERA,WHILE FERNANDO TOOK OFF TO GET CAMERA,GREG HAD PUT WALLEYE ON GROUND TO WARM HANDS,BECAUSE IT WAS COLD AND SNOWING HARD!(SOMETHING WE DIDNT EXPECT WAS SNOW)FERNANDO RETURNED WITH THE CAMERA,GREG PICKED UP HIS BIG WALLEYE AND HELD IT UP SO PROUD,BUT THERE WERE PINE NEEDLES STUCK ALL OVER THE FISH SO HE DIPPED IT IN THE LAKE,AND SURE ENOUGH,IT FELL IN AND GREG DOVE IN TO GET IT,IT WAS SO FUNNY TO SEE HIM TRYING TO TRED WATER AND FISH WITH HISBARE HANDS,THE FISH WAS GONE OF COURSE BUT HE STAYED IN WATER FOR A LIFETIME TRYING TO REACH FOR HIS TROPHY FISH!IT NEVER HAPPENED,WE DID NOT CATCH ANOTHER FISH THE REST OF THE TRIP!P.S. FORB ALL THE GRIEF GREG GAVE ME ABOUT PACKING TO MUCH,HE WAS GREATFUL FOR MY EXTRA BOOTS,AND COAT!!THERE IS A GREAT DEAL MORE OF LEARNING EXPIERIANCES IN THIS TRIP TRUST ME,I COULD GO ON FOR EVER! My wife and I were up 12/15/02 in Cove Bay. There must have been 20 - 25 perm. shacks out on the ice. There were also full - size trucks out and about! We were fishing in about 12 feet of water, and the perch are biting! Have heard Walleye's are hitting in about 17 feet of water!

The fishing started to pick up a little over the weekend with a few more people out to try. A couple differant reports of over 20 crappies caught by some groups. Right now were going out about 4 miles to about 13 feet of water. There is between 10 and 15 inches of ice just about everywhere. We have not been letting bigger trucks out yet, hopefully by the weekend with any luck we should have a road for all trucks as long as the weather cooperates. Had another report of a guy that got 5 crappies between 5 and 6 PM and the rest of the time he caught around 30 walleyes with the biggest being right around six pounds. The future is sure looking bright. There has been plenty of action and I expect that the fishing should just get better from here out. The northern fishing has been hot of late with three reports of 40+ inchers and another one that was so big that it wouldn't fit up the hole. It should be a good next couple weeks so make your plans to come experience Upper Red Lake.

Has anyone been out fishing lately. Do you know any ice depths by garrison? How was the fishing?

Fished Breezy Sat. afternoon/evening I got the usual-sore buttox and a wet arm-the other guys a few crappies and one walleye. Ice seemed pretty decent. We walked down from the road by one of the Resorts that was closed for the season, when we got back from walking off the ice there was a note on two of the three rigs that were parked there asking us to not walk/park by there again because they were "closed for the season". Makes a person feel pretty welcomed with those types of messages. I'm sure the county sherrif would just love to answer that call and cite some people walking off the lake in the dark for trespasing through a closed for the season boat launch area.
